Crafting Our Legacy
Updated: Jan 25
I was at the Amsterdam Light Festival last week — a collection of art installations using light as their medium, placed on and around the beautiful canals of Amsterdam. This year’s theme was “Legacy”. As I was reflecting on it, I found myself asking: What do I want to leave behind?
Curious, I looked up the meaning of the word.
The first definition that came up was: “An amount of money or property left to someone in a will.”
The second was: “A situation that exists now because of events, actions, etc. that took place in the past.”
I think I prefer the second definition — at least for the sake of this writing.
Now, I believe every action is a choice. And every choice we make leaves a mark, whether we see it immediately or only as it unfolds over time. That mark is our legacy — the lasting impact of our actions. But what drives those actions, and where are they directed?
How Purpose Shapes Our Actions
Purpose is the reason behind what we do. It gives meaning to our daily efforts and guides decisions — big or small. When we act with purpose, our actions align with our core values and beliefs. This alignment creates consistency and authenticity.
Finding our purpose starts with reflection, with questions like: What matters most to me?
The Role of Vision in Discovering Purpose
Vision is a clear picture of the future we want to create. It acts as a compass, pointing us toward realizing our purpose. Without vision, purpose can feel vague or overwhelming. Vision turns it into something tangible — a picture of reality — and breaks it down into a path forward and achievable goals.
Equally important, vision serves as a powerful checkpoint for our actions. With every step, we can ask ourselves: How does this action contribute to my vision?
Turning Vision into Legacy Through Action
Purpose, vision, and action are deeply connected — and I think their combined outcome becomes legacy. Yes, purpose and vision are powerful, but they turn into legacy only through action. Every step we take toward our vision adds to the story we leave behind. Consistent, intentional actions build habits, shape character, and influence others.
And while legacy is often thought of as something left behind after a lifetime, it actually begins now. Small acts of kindness, leadership, creativity, or courage accumulate over time.
Leaving a Legacy That Matters
Legacy is not about fame or fortune. It is about the meaningful impact we leave on people and the world. It is the story told by our actions, guided by purpose and shaped by vision. And the size of that impact? I’m not sure it matters as much as being conscious and intentional about it.
Because only by being conscious and intentional can we realize our highest potential — to leave a mark that continues to influence, perhaps even long after we’re gone.
